Engineered stone has continued to grow in popularity and includes materials made from quartz, marble, and semi-precious stones. A wide variety of colors are collectively offered, with most slabs available in nominal thicknesses of 3/4” (2 cm) and 1 ⅛” (3.0 cm) thick and some manufacturers also offering 1/2” (1.2 cm) thick slabs.

Quartz-based engineered stone materials are the most prevalent type and consist of particulate quartz bound together by special resins that are then shaken and compacted to create a dense, nonporous slab that is hard and hygienic. Major brands include Caesarstone, Cambria, Hanstone, Legacy, LG Viatera, Silestone and Zodiaq, which collectively are available in hundreds of colors with typically consistent patterns.

Less prevalent are products that use natural stone, such as Piedrafina, which uses marble pieces, and Concetto, which uses partial and whole semi-precious stones. Like quartz products, these products are also bound together by special resins, but Concetto is unique because each slab displays a tremendous degree of color and pattern variation, with some slabs also being translucent.

Concetto is only offered in a nominal thickness of 1” (2.5 cm). Engineered stone can be used for a variety of commercial and residential applications including countertops and work surfaces, wall cladding, windowsills, tub decks, and tub and shower surrounds, as well as furniture surfaces and tabletops.

Plamar is authorized to fabricate and install most major brands of engineered materials, which you can learn more about by clicking on any of the brand logos in the box to the right.
